 It’s the festive season!
 Is eight enough?
 Sharing the chemistry.
Fill yourself up with the festive spirit.
 An early present from Santa.
 Cooking in Style.
 Lights, Camera, Acton!
Watch your ‘baby’ as it grows.
 The ApARTments light up Canberra.
 Building more anxiety.
No signs of slowing down in 2009.

As 2008 draws to a conclusion we can only glance back and reflect with a sense of enormous pride and satisfaction at this year’s outstanding achievements. Ultimately 2008 has seen the dreams of our residents and ourselves start coming to life. There can be no more satisfying gift this Christmas.

A time and place for excitement. People become flushed with excitement the minute they visit our display suite. Many have asked if they could move in immediately.

We wish to express our endless gratitude to the many individuals and businesses that have participated in creating the extraordinary architectural and cultural rejuvenation of Canberra’s centre. NewActon has received unprecedented acclaim winning no less than eight prestigious industry awards.

The recognition by the wider community and our peers of what has been achieved has exceeded all our expectations. Certainly worthy of all the blood, sweat and tears, NewActon was fully tenanted very quickly after completion and its elegant residential addition; ‘The apARTments’ is tracking well beyond our expectations. Though the barriers were significant, patience has been rewarded.

So may we express, from the Molonglo Group and Macquarie Group, to our friends, locals, residents, investors, architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, public art consultants, artists, builders, specialist tradespeople, and everyone who has helped to create ‘a less ordinary development’ a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
To date the NewActon precinct has pocketed eight of the most significant industry awards. The vision for the NewActon precinct to blend arts facilities, cafes, retail and residential apartments continues to draw accolades from the toughest of critics and judges.

The most recent awards include:
  • The 2008 RAIA National Award for Commercial Architecture.

  • The 2008 Australian Property Institute, Bradley Allen Award, for outstanding work on a commercial development.

  • The 2008 Planning Institute Australia’s (ACT) Award, for Excellence.

  • The 2008 Planning Institute of Australia (ACT) President’s Award, for the NewActon development, in the Urban Design, Ideas and Achievement category.
Judges of the Planning Institute of Australia awards lauded Molonglo Group for providing “an outstanding example of sensitive development of an important site containing a significant heritage building in central Canberra”. You can only succeed in achieving this level of excellence when you understand the local culture and history.

The Molonglo Group is from Canberra. They grew up in Canberra, studied in Canberra and now live and work in Canberra. The cultural explosion that is NewActon could not have been achieved by anybody else. There’s been an intuitive level of management and nurturing for this project that’s elevated it from the norm.

“The Molonglo Group is very proud to be such a significant contributor in reshaping the architectural and cultural landscape of Canberra and believe NewActon is a testament that Canberra can deliver quality national and international standards in built form” said Nectar Efkarpidis recently.

There have been many significant achievements in 2008 and we look forward with eager anticipation to achieving more in 2009.

There’s an industry dedicated to it, celebrities born with it, books written about it and million’s who wish they had it. You’ve either got it, or you don’t. It’s called chemistry. Karl Fender, David Sutherland and Craig Baudin of Fender Katsalidis Architects have shared it for years. “Our chemistry just keep’s getting better” explained Architect Karl Fender this week, as we caught up with him in Canberra to discuss the collaborative process behind the NewActon precinct.

Karl quickly points out that “the Efkarpidis family and the team from Macquarie share our chemistry”. Designing and building is a collaborative process, “we all feed off each other”. “It’s a journey”, pausing to reflect, then continuing, “having a client that’s on the same journey is integral”.

Architecture is “a process of different people”. “Think of it in these terms” he explains, “initially David and I developed the ‘Design Ideal’ for NewActon. Craig then becomes involved in the delivery of the ‘Design Ideal’. It can be a long and highly complex process including for example, heritage management, building documentation, working with contractors and many other hurdles. It’s not set and forget.”

Knowing how your colleagues will react and trusting their judgment comes from years of working together. To bring the ‘Design Ideal’ to life, all hands work together yet separately, all at the same time. “David and Karl had a major hand in the initial design then Craig is the firm hand that delivers”. Regardless of the process, there is an intuitive and organic aspect to Karl’s explanation that brings to life the creative and dynamic nature of architecture.

Throughout “we remain inspired to keep to the ‘Design Ideal’”. Sharing similar values can turn obstacles into opportunities, “certainly there has to be a like mindedness”. Take the shape of the new luxury towers, The ApARTments, for example. Its elegant design evolved from a “design position to built construction with artful presence”. There are many other examples of converted opportunities by the FKA team.

Whatever the secret to their professional chemistry, the resident’s living and working in NewActon would agree. It works.

We’re always vigilant to pass on added value to residents whenever the opportunity arises. In a twist, outdated Miele ovens for apartments up to level 10 have been upgraded as the original ovens are out of production. It’s given us great pleasure to be able to pass this upgrade on to those residents at no additional cost.

These types of opportunities don’t often arise, but if and when they do we will take full advantage of them on residents’ behalf.

You can view one of the upgraded Miele ovens installed at the display suite. Click here for an overview of the advantages of your new oven.
Residents will not only be living in style, they’ll also be cooking in style. All residents in the ApARTment’s will receive a set of stylish Ittalia induction pots.

An induction pot is faster, safer and more energy efficient than a traditional pot.
The NewActon webcam is up and running. The site camera is now feeding live images to The ApARTment’s website, updated every 15 seconds. Log onto www.theapartments.com.au and go to the news section and click on construction update to watch in real-time the construction’s progress.

Floor by floor, brick by brick, in hail or sunshine, bare witness to the continuing erection of this exciting new building.
There’s nothing more satisfying than watching your dreams brought to life. It starts with a giant hole in the ground and climaxes the day you move in to your luxury apartment. This though can be a tedious and frustrating process, patience can be tested.

NewActon is unlike other developments. We look at everything from a different perspective. You can view the construction of your apartment from a different perspective as well. Why not order a glass of wine from Parlour Wine Room, follow the simple steps below and watch your dream as it’s brought to life.

Instructions:

Step1. Locate the hammerhead crane. The hammerhead crane signals the height the building will rise to.

Step 2. Locate the two internal core columns rising out of the construction site. These will rise to the height of the building during construction. As each floor is added, you will see large numbers painted on the columns. These numbers indicate the floor level. By the end of December you will see the first two levels of the podium.

Step 3. Keeping in mind the building will be 18 levels, use each vantage point to approximate the location of your apartment.

Now you just need to sit back, enjoy a second glass of wine and the stunning view.
The ApARTments were inspired by creative thinking and bright ideas.

The Molonglo Group continues to weave creativity into every aspect of The ApARTments. The entire precinct has surprises around every corner. Now as the sun sets, Molonglo Group have a new surprise in store for Canberra. Located within The ApARTments building site, on top of a hammerhead crane, The ApARTments logo will be lit at night. Now you can see your new home from any point in Canberra.
As part the precinct’s arts environment, we continually display inspiring new works of creativity and art for residents and visitors. The latest makes reference to global warming, the rising cost of natural resources and the collapse of the environment and then to the subsequent rebirth of a new society in an imagined post-apocalyptic landscape. Whoa. Can’t you just feel the anxiety?

The latest sculpture acquired by The Molonglo Group for NewActon is by Canberra sculptor Joel Bliss, titled ‘Anxiety Piece #6, Monument 2008’. The sculpture’s structure appears unbalanced yet balanced and although it doesn’t seem about to collapse, it doesn’t seem strong enough to support much either. Created with recycled and reclaimed materials, it will be on display in the Heritage Link, East Building foyer. View more of Joel’s work at joelbliss.com
The 2009 economic landscape shines brighter than ever for the NewActon precinct. Whilst the broad economy in general has slowed, NewActon is full steam ahead. Colliers International’s Residential Project Marketing Director, Derek Whitcombe’s optimism has been supported by a sustained level of enquiry and sales activity in this development. The most obvious conclusion to be drawn from these, are the markets recognition of The ApARTment’s value and high quality.

“Even thought the media has been full of doom and gloom, we have been maintaining a very good rate of sales in the project. It is obvious that people are confident that the quality of the project, it’s now well know precinct and the fantastic views it affords, make it the project to invest in” Derek Whitcombe said.

Significant developments such as The ApARTment’s don’t come around everyday. They are years in the planning and building. The contribution of the development has been widely lauded and its impact on Canberra’s landscape will pay dividends for a long time to come.
